I started the blog, The Traveller in the Evening, in 2020, after being hastily and unexpectedly ejected from the world of work, deciding I’d had enough of that life and it was time to turn to more pressing things.
The Traveller Hasteth in the Evening is an engraving by Blake from 1793. Blake shows his traveller pacing his way toward some unknown destination. Morton Paley shortened the title to The Traveller in the Evening for his book about Blake’s later works. I borrowed Paley’s title because it reflects both my situation and the situation at large.
In any case, I started the blog and it’s been a modest success. But I have been erratic in adding to it: major articles are published when I have done a bout of reading and have the time to write, but I’ve been slow to add shorter pieces as a blog didn’t seem appropriate.
To remedy this, I’m starting up here on Substack, aiming to create shorter articles, announcements and think pieces here in parallel with the blog. I’m not sure yet what benefits there will be for paid subscribers, other than a free copy of the digital book, Serge Arnoux’s Mirror of Blake, the ability to comment on posts and start a chat. I know I can put articles behind the paywall, but my instinct is to spread the joy by making them available to anyone who is interested. What do you think?
I’ve spent the last few days importing some of the old posts into Substack. These include major essays and reviews, so if you haven’t already read them, come and have a look, and tell me what works and what doesn’t.
It’s early days, and I’m open to suggestions for reviews, events to announce, or anything else of interest to readers.
Please click on the link below to subscribe if you haven’t already subscribed to my mailing list via the Traveller in the Evening blog. You can subscribe for free, or take out the paid subscription anyway, which I’ve set at the minimum price.
And please forward this mail to anyone who may be interested.
Blake’s Death Day
Saturday 12th August, 12 noon. Bunhill Fields, 38 City Road, London, EC1Y 2BG.
Each year The Bake Society gathers at Blake’s graveside on or near the anniversary of his death, 12th August 1827, to celebrate his life. I am away and unable to make it this year, but it’s a good chance to meet with other Blakeans. Afterwards, by tradition, people repair to a nearby pub, The Artillery Arms, for a well-earned drink.
All are welcome – the nearest tube stations are Old St and Moorgate, and the bus stop for the 55 and 243 buses is nearby.
